"Test of Time"" is our most significant update to Civilization VII, introducing foundational changes that increase player agency, strategy depth, and multi-Age progression.
Leading One Civilization
You can now lead any civilization through every Age. ""Time-Tested"" civs allow you to persist as your chosen civilization throughout the entire game. While that entails playing outside of your civ's ""Apex Age"" (in which you possess its full, unique set of abilities and traits), you gain a competitive framework via Civics and ""Syncretism.""
• Syncretism: Borrow Units or infrastructure from other civs currently in their Apex Age to create hybrid playstyles.
• Affirmation: Alternatively, choose to reinforce your own identity through unique Traditions tailored to your civilization.
• AI Behavior: By default, AI will match your choice to either stay as a single civ or swap during Age transitions.
Triumphs
Legacy Paths are replaced by Triumphs, a flexible system tied to the six core Attributes.
• Goals: Challenges range from population milestones to multi-front wars.
• Progression: Complete Major/Minor Triumphs to earn instant bonuses or unlock Dedications for your next Age.
• Triumph Sets: Customize your campaign's tone and goals with curated sets like ""Conqueror"" or ""Trailblazer.""
Victories
Victories are now fully integrated across all Ages, replacing the linear race to the Modern Age. The four Victory types—Military, Cultural, Economic, and Scientific—now feature unique scoring systems.
• Dominance: For Military, Cultural, and Economic paths, success requires reaching and maintaining a significant score threshold over opponents. The threshold lowers as the game progresses, rewarding consistent dominance.
• Scientific: Reaching 100 points, followed by a final launch sequence.
• Victory Screen: New UI elements provide a clear view of your standing, how opponents are earning points, and the current status of each path.
UI/UX Improvements
• Nested Tooltips: Game terms can now be inspected for quick, in-game explanations.
• Appeal Lens: A new strategic tool to identify Charming and Breathtaking tiles, aiding in Happiness management.
• Commerce Screen: A centralized hub to manage Resources, Trade Routes, and Treasure Convoys without menu-hopping.
• Advisor Council: Advisors now provide proactive, tailored strategic suggestions based on your chosen Victory path.
• Deselect Units: Added a Deselect action on Units.
Happiness, Governments, & Celebrations
• Happiness: Settlement Happiness is now categorized into five stages (Ecstatic to Angry), directly impacting Government abilities.
• Governments: Each Government now grants a passive ability and exclusive Traditions, with reworked Celebrations that are more impactful but harder to maintain.
New Content
• Maps: Three new map types—Shattered Seas, Fractal Continents, and Archipelago.
• Hotseat: Local multiplayer is now available for same-device play.
• Leaders: Gilgamesh and Alexander the Great are now available.
Art & Music
We have added 175 new music tracks, including alternate mixes that scale with your civilization's evolution. New architectural sets and Unit assets ensure cohesive, historically accurate visuals for every culture and region across the Ages.
Balance & Gameplay
We have performed a massive balance pass across all civs, leaders, and Tech Trees. These adjustments focus on ensuring every Yield remains relevant throughout all three Ages, reducing late-game ""Yield bloat,"" and enabling snowballing through deliberate decision-making.
